Baking Soda and Colored Vinegar Fun!

One of my Pinboards on Pinterest is dedicated to projects for the entertainment of my four little girls (and their friends). If I need an idea, that's where I go. I rarely follow directions or do things exactly the same as what I see, but this project was inspired by some creative pinner and it provided a good hour of entertainment for all four of my little aspiring scientists!

What we used:
  • Ice Tray
  • Vinegar
  • Food Coloring
  • Baking Soda
  • Medicine Dropper(s)
  • Plate(s), Bowl(s), or a Pan
  • Table Cloth or Drop Cloth
First, I told the girls that I had a science project for them. I never tell them what they are doing until they are doing it.  Ha. Maybe it's just me, but I love the element of surprise. So, I called them to the table and let them watch as I poured the vinegar into the ice trays and added a different food color drop in each slot. I did not use a drop cloth, but if you are not going to re-stain your table in a couple weeks like I am, I would definately put down something I wouldn't mind getting food coloring on.  (Also, normally I would have put old t-shirt's on the girls to protect their clothes).

Then, I gave each of them a plastic plate filled with baking soda. It actually didn't take that much baking soda. I would start with a thin layer, let them play and if needed add more.

Next, I handed them each a medicine dropper, and the fun began!

(((PICTURES TO BE INSERTED WHEN I'M NOT SO TIRED)))

The baking soda reacted for much longer than I expected. Even after my 2 year old had completely covered her plate with a quarter inch of liquid it was still reacting when she would add more vinegar.

This was a fun activity! Each of my kids loved it, my 6 year old, my 4 year old, my 2 year old (especially), and even the baby had fun watching!

We will definately use this one again!
  • FUN:   *****      Girls loved it. Would do it again for sure.
  • MESS: ***          This could be a little messy, but it's not a big deal.
  • PREP:  *****      Easy! Household items.
